PRESS RELEASE 29-09-11 Chinese National Artistic Gymnastics Team choose Northern Ireland as base for Pre-Olympic training.

Salto NGC, DCAL, Sport NI and Lisburn City Council are pleased to announce that we have secured the Chinese National Artistic Gymnastics Team for an Olympic training camp in July 2012.

This announcement has come after months of negotiation with the Chinese Gymnastics Association. Salto CEO Tony Byrne and Head Coach Sun Jie played an integral part in the negotiation process with many late night and early morning phone calls to the Chinese Gymnastics Association and subsequently a 4 day visit to the Northern Ireland was organised in July of this year. Two of the Chinese National coaches Xiong Jingbin and Jin Weiguo visited the facility and were very impressed with the welcome they received from Northern Ireland and the Salto facility in Lisburn.

In the official letter of acceptance they thanked Salto for the warm reception during their visit and that they were ‘deeply moved’ by the ‘sincerity and warmness’ of accepting their national artistic gymnastics team.

The training camp will be jointly funded by DCAL, Sport NI and Lisburn City Council. The Chinese team of up to 30 people will train at Salto for 10 days in July in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Salto are very excited to welcome such a prestigious team to train at the facility. In 2008 they won a total of 18 medals at the Beijing Olympics. Both women’s and men’s teams won all-around gold.

Sports Minister Caral Ni Chuilin made the official announcement at the press conference on Wednesday 28th September at Salto NGC. She spoke of the news.

“The world number one country in gymnastics has chosen the North of Ireland to achieve their Olympic Goals.”

“Having the best in the world to train locally will raise the profile of the sport and the local facilities. This is something everyone can be proud of and I hope that this inspires our young people to get involved in Sport”

Lord Coe, chairman of the London organising committee of the Olympic and Paralympics Games, said he had visited Salto on a number of occasions, including the official opening ceremony of Salto in 2007 and knew the Chinese Artistic Gymnasts would enjoy “being based at one of the best gymnastics facilities in the UK”.

“The team is also assured one of the warmest welcomes as they spend time in Lisburn,” he added. “Congratulations to the sports administrators in Northern Ireland for hosting another team before competition begins at the 2012 Games”.

Press Release

NORTHERN IRELAND WELCOMES OLYMPIANS

27TH May 2011- United Kingdom Olympic gymnasts have arrived in Northern Ireland to train in the Salto Gymnastics Club in Lisburn. The visit by five gymnasts includes two Beijing Olympians and leading British Gymnastics Coach Paul Hall who will also run a coaching clinic for Northern Ireland coaches during the weekend.

Louis Smith is the 2008 Olympic Pommel horse bronze medallist, 2009 European  Silver medallist and the 2010 world and European silver medallist. Also training in Northern Ireland are Luke Folwell (the most successful british gymnast in Commonwealth games history with 5 medals in Delhi 2010) and Daniel Keatings (2009 world and European all-around silver medallist, 2010 European pommel horse champion). British Junior gymnasts Cameron Mackenzie and Thomas Gibbs will also be training alongside Northern Ireland’s own Luke Carson who is funded by Sport Northern Ireland’s Athlete Investment Programme.

Watching the first days training and meeting the gymnasts, Dr Olive Brown, Board member of Sport Northern Ireland said, “It’s very significant to have Olympic gymnasts training here in Salto. We’re proud of the facilities and expertise on site, including accommodation and ice baths! It is also a good example of Olympic legacy, that local athlete Luke Carson is training alongside them and under the expert coaching of Paul Hall.

“Salto also boasts many international gymnastic coaches and working with Sport Northern Ireland and Lisburn City council , we are utilising their world-wide relationships to encourage Olympic Squads to consider Northern Ireland as a base for their Olympic pre-games training”.

Olive Brown added, “We’ve already attracted several pre-Olympic events including the Boccia World Cup which takes place this August and there will be further pre-olympic qualifying events announced in the coming months. Overall we expect to welcome Olympic or Paralympic teams to the province with many international athletes choosing to train or qualify for their sport in facilities across Northern Ireland. That will be achieved working with our partners in sports venues and local councils just as we have with Lisburn City Council here in Salto.
